Chance Jarvis

KENNELLED IN WALES (MARCH 2010)

Due to a change of circumstances with his second fosterer, Chance went to kennels in Mid Glamorgan where he was doing exceptionally well and, we are happy to say, the old lovely Chance was now back.

Luke says of him “His temperament is fantastic. He is not a mad border Collie in the kennels but he does need a lot of walks and exercise. Chance sits, stays, gives paws, lays down with commands and walks nicely by your side. A home where Chance would get lots of one to one attention would definitely be the best for him. He has a lot of admirers and several people who would have adopted him in a heartbeat if they didn’t have their full compliment of dogs already.

I think he would go well with another bitch but it would need supervision, of course. I have taken Chance for a second walk today with Tiffany, one of our girls, and there was not one cross word even when Tiffany was jumping on Chance’s head and pulling him by the collar!!! He was more concerned with going to the toilet and walking away from her. I have also put them in the kennel off the lead and he is much more concerned with getting away from her than fighting.

In my opinion Chance would be great in the park on the lead with other dogs but I don’t think rehoming him with another male dog would be a good idea at this moment in time.”

CHANCE’S STORY

Although Chance is neither Irish nor a Retriever, we were helping him to look for a special home as his owner, a very good friend to IRR, was suffering from serious illness. His friend, Lina was also seeking a special forever home.

His distraught owner said of him “Chance is a Working Collie, he will be 4 in June 2010 but is very young for his age. Chance has HUGE amounts of energy and like most Collies does not know when to stop. He has attended obedience classes and has competed at an intermediate level. Chance thrives when he is doing obedience, he loves to “work” and needs this stimulation. Chance has done agility but he does tend to get over stimulated so needs a strong handler, however he can do all the equipment and really enjoys the interaction with his handler and the exercise.

Chance has lived with dogs and bitches and cats, he is fine with children and teens although I would not recommend young children purely as his energy level is so high.

Chance needs strong leadership and will push the boundaries, as most Working Collies do. He is super intelligent, which is great for obedience as he learns quickly, but it also means that he will learn bad habits as fast as good ones. Because of this, his prospective adopters will need to be consistent in his training.

Chance is not destructive. Chance is not “into” toys but does like to play tug as a reward for working, he is not food orientated.

Chance loves to swim, he does not need to have anything thrown into the water as he will jump straight in!

I would suggest that Chance either is an only dog, as he needs so much stimulation and attention, or lives in a multi dog household where the dogs are older and steady.

Anyone wanting to compete at obedience will delight at this boy as he really is a joy to work. Chance is NOT a pet dog, he loves and NEEDS to work!”

REPORT FROM HIS FOSTER HOME

Ann, who, very kindly, fostered both dogs said of him “Well, we have had the pleasure of Chance’s company for a few days now. So here’s a bit about him!!

Chance is a shortcoated, red & white Border Collie, he is a lovely colour almost chocolate!! He is fully vaccinated, microchipped & neutered.

He is lovely natured, gentle & very obedient, he is good on the lead & comes when called. He will even obey my 4yr old son!! He has done obedience with his previous owner.

Chance loves playing and running and does get very excited, and can be vocal in expressing this!!

Chance is great with other dogs, ignores my cats, and loves the children!!

He will come and sit at your feet and put his paw on your lap, asking for a stroke, and looks at you with deep, dark eyes – how can you resist?!!

Chance is housetrained, and travels well in the car.

There must be someone that can offer this beautiful boy a loving forever home.

The ideal home for Chance would be with someone that will continue doing obedience with him and who Chance can be with for most of the day.”

CHANCE HAS FOUND HIS FOREVER HOME

After a lot of ups and downs, Chance finally found his perfect forever home with Peter and Diane in Norfolk. He is going to have the opportunity of doing both Obedience and Agility as well as being a very much loved pet, of course, so his long wait for exactly the right people was totally worthwhile.
