Darcy

THE LUCK OF THE IRISH WAS WITH THEM

Darcy and his sister Martha were found tied in a bag by a member of the public when they were only a couple of months old. They were relinquished to Ennis Pound in the hope of getting them a wonderful home.

As they had no great bond between them, they went to separate fosterers on arrival in Scotland and they were both doing well.

Their names were very famous ones in IRR circles (being those of two of Lorraine’s dogs). Hopefully, baby Darcy and baby Martha won’t take took much after Darcy (who had the Darcy Cannon Award for the Most Useless Obedience Dog created in his honour) and Martha, the Monster, but, for sure, we hope they will both follow in their pawsteps by having very long and happy lives.

HISTORY

Darcy is a cream coloured, male Golden Retriever x Labrador who was 4 months old when he came to IRR in 2017. This beautiful boy was groomed and was going to be neutered when he reached a year old.

PERSONALITY

Kathryn said “Like most Goldens, he is very affectionate. Darcy is the more timid of the two but he is quickly learning. He does jump up and this does need to be worked on but all in all, He is a very well rounded character and will make a wonderful pet”.

Lynn, his fosterer in Scotland, soon after his arrival said “ He is very clingy with people and has to sit beside you. He seems to prefer human company to dogs. He lacks confidence but is not shy. He is a lovely boy, not pushy, and knows by your tone of voice if he is not allowed to do something”.

After a couple of weeks in foster, she added “Darcy is a lovely boy. He is mannerly and listens and is eager to please. He has grown in confidence and is much less clingy than he was. He loves his cuddles and brings you a “present” several times a day. Be it a toy, stick, stone, piece of paper etc he is very proud of himself and whines and tells you stories.

HEALTH

He had a very heavy worm burden (round worms) when he arrived but he has now been wormed and appears to be worm free. He has had on/off bouts of diarrhoea since being wormed and lost a bit of weight. At the moment he is being raw fed (which he loves) until I get more weight back on him. I will then switch him back to kibble.  Otherwise, he is very healthy

SOCIAL LEARNING

In Ireland, he was socialised with cats, dogs and children. Kathry said he needed a little training, like most puppies, especially learning recall and to walk on a lead. He is fantastic in the car being happy and content to travel in a vehicle. He is crate trained and shows no evidence of resource guarding.

Lynn, in his first assessment on 16/02/17 said “Darcy is a 5 and a half month old typical pup. He is very friendly with people and other dogs. He is very vocal and whines a lot on walks especially when he has a toy and he generally chats to you.

He has no basic training but he comes back for a whistle and is not yet fully housetrained.

I’m told he is good with children and cats and have no reason not to believe that”.

Two weeks on she reported “He has a short attention span and is quite greedy therefore he gets very excited if training treats are on offer and forgets what you have asked him to do!

He plays well with the other dogs and is very social. He has no issues at present however I think he would be best rehomed with another dog mainly because I think he could possibly suffer from separation anxiety if left on his own and he also needs to keep building confidence”.

DARCY’S DREAM HOME

As with his sister, Darcy would love a home with someone kind and gentle who is at home most of the time and who will be happy to spend time with him, playing, walking and continuing his training.

To complete his dream home and bolster his confidence, another sweet-natured, playful dog or even a couple of dogs would be absolutely perfect.
