Dr Bailey

Dr Bailey is a lovely, average-sized 3yr old Golden Retriever.

HISTORY

Dr Bailey’s early life must have been horrible and abusive. When he came into IRR care, he was terrified of everything and he remained so, despite the kindness of the staff during the four weeks he spent in the kennels during which time he was health checked, castrated and received the necessary vaccinations to come to the UK.

In order to get him on the transport to the UK, his kindly male transporter and the kennel staff had to wheel him on a trolley from the kennels to the van as he was totally frozen with fear.

On arrival in the UK, he was still so scared he wouldn’t walk and had to be carried both when he was picked up from the transport by Paula and, then subsequently, when collected from her by Lynn to be taken on to his foster home with her In Scotland.

HEALTH

He is in very good health but Bailey is extremely underweight.

PERSONALITY

Bailey is a lovely friendly boy who totally transformed in the first 4 days after his arrival from being terrified of everything to being alert and inquisitive, playful, relaxed and happy,

At that stage, he still dropped to the ground when getting his harness on but he did stop trying to get the ground to swallow him up. Once on the lead, he would walk pretty well.

His confidence will need to continue being built but he is definitely coming on in leaps and bounds.

After a few more days Lynn said “Bailey is a super boy who loves affection, cuddles and being brushed! He has discovered the stairs and can now climb them confidently although, going down, he is a bit uncoordinated but he gets there.

He is so trusting now and he wants to please. It’s lovely to see the
massive change in him”.

SOCIAL LEARNING

TRAVEL: Once in the vehicle, he is happy and content whilst travelling.

HOUSETRAINING: He is house trained

BASIC TRAINING: He seems to have had very little basic training.

LEADWALKING and RECALL: He is a dog I would never use a collar and lead or slip lead on. He is much more comfortable and confident wearing a harness.

He walks well on a harness and does not pull. The outside world is all very new to him. He has progressed from being terrified and lying flat on the ground to taking hesitant steps forward. He is good with traffic and sits quietly by the side of the country roads to let it pass.

He is great off the lead (in our secure field) now he has the hang of what a walk is all about. He listens to your whistle and knows his name. He has clearly not been walked for a while, his fitness is poor and his pads are very soft.

RESOURCE GUARDING: Bailey has shown no evidence of resource guarding. He is passionate about balls

SEPARATION ANXIETY: He shows no sign of any separation anxiety

ADULTS: Bailey is very friendly with adults. He loves people and is super friendly towards them.

CHILDREN: He has not been tested with children

DOGS: Bailey can lack confidence initially but he is good with other dogs. He has learned to play but sometimes he is a little too enthusiastic. This comes as no surprise as playing is, clearly, new to him and he is still learning.

He gets on with all dogs

CATS: He has not been tested with cats

BAILEY’S DREAM HOME

Above all, he needs people who are gentle and kind but who will also continue with his positive training. An adult home with people who are around a lot and have plenty of time to devote to him would be ideal.

He takes guidance and confidence from other dogs therefore he would be best suited to a home with another confident dog who can continue to show him the ropes. He gets along fine with both males and females.

August 2018

Dr Bailey has gone to his Forever Home.
