NOT FAR TO LOOK (OCTOBER 2017)

To nobody’s surprise, Toby and Elvis didn’t have far to look for their dream home. They waved their magic wands and sprinkled fairy dust over Marion so she, very quickly, fell under their spell and joined our ever swelling ranks of extremely happy “failed” fosterers.

HISTORY

Toby and Elvis have been together all their lives and have a strong bond with each other so IRR will not split them and they will need to be placed together.

IRR was contacted to see if we could help when circumstances changed and their unselfish owner made the decision that was best for the dogs even though it was extremely difficult for the family as could be seen.

The owner had three children whose father washed both of them before they went to be neutered and they were told that they would be properly groomed before going to the UK.

After receiving a veterinary health check and the necessary inoculations to travel to the UK, they were kept in owner foster for a month before being fostered for a week by Cathleen, one of our most experienced IRR fosterers who was able to ascertain their personalities in a new environment. On arrival in the UK, they were fostered by Marion.

THEIR DREAM HOME

Above all else, Toby and Elvis need to be rehomed together. Apart from that, they would fit in almost anywhere as long as it was with a loving family who would have plenty of time to spend with them.

They are an absolute dream pair who are fantastic ambassadors for their breed and someone is going to be extremely lucky to have the privilege of adopting them.

ELVIS

Elvis is a 6 year old neutered, cream coloured Golden Retriever.

PERSONALITY

This affectionate boy has a mischievous personality and is much more vivacious than Toby. Marion describes him as “A happy, friendly, puppylike but confident dog who is good with everyone. He has severe ants in his pants but this adds to his appeal. He loves meeting people but he does take a long time to calm down. He jumps up on adults but never on children. Elvis is a lot more in your face than other 6yr old dogs but he is getting better as he is obedient, loving and eager to please.

HEALTH

He is in very good health except he does pee and drink a lot. We are awaiting a urine test for diabetes and a check that he doesn’t have a partially paralysed larynx as his bark is weak.

He is about 10lbs underweight but I have increased his food gradually to try and put some weight on him”.

SOCIAL LEARNING

TRAVEL: Elvis seemed a bit worried in the car with Kathryn. He travels reasonably well provided he is with his pal, Toby. However, both would benefit from short rides in the car to get rid of the anxiety that Elvis definitely feels.

HOUSETRAINING: He is house-trained

LEADWALKING and RECALL: IRR was told that he was good on the lead and had relatively good recall. He is much more excitable than Toby but this can be put down to lack of exercise. He is very strong on the lead and would benefit from a ‘gentle leader’ to bring him to heel.
Marion says “He pulls on the lead but I am working on that. He has a great recall even with distractions like deer and cats. He is actually better off lead than on”.

RESOURCE GUARDING: He is not food possessive

SEPARATION ANXIETY: Elvis shows no signs of separation anxiety

CHILDREN: He is great with children.

DOGS: We were told he is good with other dogs and this proved to be true on a visit to the vet in Ireland. Elvis mixes well with other dogs and is good around them. He loves to play and interacts well with dogs as well as people.

CATS: He does want to chase them when on lead but purely in fun.
