Gone to Rainbow Bridge

OUR BEAUTIFUL BOY IS GONE

(2005? – 16/07/2014)

June and Rob are still reeling from the sudden loss of their beloved Jez.

June says “Life is so empty without him as everywhere we went he came too. This was a picture of us all in our new home the week before Jezzie went over Rainbow Bridge. He was out in front as usual and, apart from looking a little more mature, we thought he looked really well. How can looks be so deceiving?

He was great fun for the grandchildren. This was taken a couple of weeks before Jez passed away. He had such a wonderful temperament. To see our granddaughter crawling all over him and never a cross word from him demonstrates what a lovely boy he was but, when he had had enough, he used to try and hide so they couldn’t find him.

We think now that he must have been in some discomfort as the vet said he had a tumour the size of a melon, but he never complained once. I don’t think he settled in Farrington Gurney very well, as he did get very nervous of the different sounds here. Wilmington was so quiet and he loved spending time with Max the farm dog next door. He used to love the snow and ferreting around for new smells.

We will be getting his ashes back soon and we have decided to take them back to Wilmington and scatter them where he was truly happy. I can still see him now bounding along the lane when Rob was taking me to work. He always took off as soon as the door was open and we had to wait for him to come back from wishing everyone good morning in the village.

We miss him so much. The house is so quiet and empty without him, but I can now have happy thoughts of him and I don’t think he suffered too much.”

Jackie and Ron, who fostered him, loved him too and had these words of comfort for June and Rob “My Dad passed away nearly 11yrs ago. He was a man that loved animals and especially Golden Retrievers. I have always thought that he has the job of looking after all of our doggies that pass over until we can meet them again. You might think me mad, but I am sure that he has Jez with him so he is still being well looked after for sure. The thought that my Dad was looking after our little Gizmo after he passed really did help.

Always having that special place in our hearts, Jez is not gone but is simply a thought away.

GOODBYE TO A WONDERFUL BOY

Today, June had to say those awful words “My beloved Jez has gone over the Bridge and I’m devastated.”

She told us they took him out in the morning and he seemed OK, if a bit quiet. They then went to Wells on the bus in the afternoon because, during the recent days it had been too hot for him to go with them in the car. When they got back he was not at all well and didn’t want to get up and greet them, which was definitely not him.

Fearing something serious, they rang the vet and then took him straight down to Midsomer Norton.

The vet was very good and took blood samples as well as doing a scan which revealed a mass in his stomach. The vet immediately operated on Jez, hoping that he might be able to remove it, but, apparently it was attached to other organs. The kindest thing was to let him go to sleep.

June says “I can’t imagine my life without him as everywhere we went he came too. He even came over the pub with us last night and I sneaked him a bit of sausage.”

This news has come as a terrible shock to everyone but, of course, more so to poor June and Rob although Jackie and Ron, who fostered Jez, are also terribly upset at his passing too. He was still quite young and should have had many more happy years ahead of him. Why is it that life can be so cruel?

It’s very hard for June and Rob to be positive right now when the pain of loss is so real and so hard to bear but let’s hope they can try to remember the good times and there were many. Jez was one of the lucky ones who, after a horrible start, had a wonderful life, he didn’t suffer a long illness and he took the need for his humans to make almost impossible decisions out of their hands.

June, words are never enough at times like this but it is good to believe that Jez didn’t die today, he simply fell asleep in your heart.

HIS STORY

Jez was fostered by Jackie in Norfolk who said, “Jez is about 2-3 years old and is a neutered male, who came to us from one of the pounds in Ireland, so we haven’t really got any background of his past.

When he first arrived, he was very quiet. After being here a few days, he developed a cough and a runny nose poor fella, he has also a bit of a limp. I took him to the vets, who said that the limp is probably to do with the cartilage in his right shoulder, from and an old wound maybe, the vet also said there was no point in x-raying it as it wouldn`t show up on the x-ray. I have been giving him acute trauma (homeopathic drops) everyday and it seems to help him.

Jez has been here with me for 3 wks now and is an absolute delight to have around. He is totally housetrained, he hasn`t had any accidents in the house at all.

He gets on great with both of my dogs, especially Bridie, who of course enjoys playing with him. Gizmo my 14 yr old Shih Tzu just ignores him really as he is too old to play now and likes the quiet life.

Bridie and Jez

Jez sits and gives his paw, he also sometimes sings to you when he has a fluffy toy in his mouth and is exceptionally happy, It is soo nice to hear, and also makes you feel very happy too. I`m always happy listening to his singing.

Jez has chased a cat out of my garden, but then he was doing what Bridie was doing and following her, so I don’t know whether or not he would chase them as an only dog.

I find that most dogs will chase cats if they run anyway.

He is a very good boy in the car and travels really well, very calm!. He loves being groomed and will sit there for as long as he feels the need to. Jez laps up all the fuss you can give him, without being over the top.

He greets everyone who comes to visit with a very waggy tail and a song, which isn’t loud by the way. When he and Bridie play together, Jez does tend to bark at her, as much to say “Come on play some more, lol.

Jex will need some lead training as he does pull, but I find that he is not too bad on a halti.

As far as recall is concerned, Jez comes quite quickly to you when called, but I havent tried him off lead in an open space outside, as its not our policy to let our foster dogs run free unless in a totally secure area, where there is no possibility of escape.

He does come back when he is on a longline though.

Jez doesn’t like being left on his own for too long, although he is ok for a couple of hours.

He isn’t too keen on thunderstorms and is likely to hide until it’s all over.

He would make a beautiful pet for a family with children over the age of 8.

To sum Jez up, he is an affectionate, loving and loyal dog, who thrives in the company of humans and appears happiest when also in the company of female dogs.”

FIRST WEEK IN HIS FOREVER HOME

June said. “Jez had a good night, once he found out that he couldn’t share our bed!! He was absolutely fine and no doubt you have gathered that he slept in our bedroom. Not a peep once he settled. Wanted to come to work with me this morning!! Rob is going to take him for a long walk this morning so that he can get his bearings. Considering the long journey and upheaval, he is marvellous, so friendly and laid back.

Rob took him walking for hours yesterday and he came back black as a pot! Had to go and buy a stiff brush for him, which he seemed to love.

Rob is gradually taking him around so that he gets used to where he is. He didn’t bat an eyelid at the cows and beef around by us. We haven’t introduced him to the cats yet – slowly does it.” Rob has been taking him for some really long walks and he is quite shattered!! (but seems very happy).

Rob gave him a part bath yesterday morning as our lanes are really mucky at the moment. He really likes the water and when I am in the bath he walks up and down by the side and looks as if he is about to jump in.

He was introduced to George (one of our cats) yesterday afternoon and they sat side by side on a seat which we have in the porch. He was very interested!!!!

Rob was acting as guardian, so all was well.

UPDATE NOVEMBER 08

June said. “We have been taking Jez to the training sessions and he is now beginning to enjoy them. The first week he was very nervous but has improved greatly since then. He is fabulous with the children and is fine with my son’s dog Sophie, but Sophie is very jealous of him we think. My son absolutely adores Jez and Sophie will keep barking in his face (Jez’s). He is so patient with her and acts like the perfect gentleman, but I’m sure he feels like biting her bum!

He is very obedient. We let him out in the garden and you only have to call him once and back he comes. He did tangle with the farm dogs, but held his ground and they seemed to make friends after that. I think they were just sussing out the new boy on the block.

We all love him very much and I think he realises that he will be now be staying with us for good. He seems very content and happy. We took him out for Sunday lunch last Sunday and he was quite happy to sit in the car for a while. He loves the car, going out and socialising. My daughter in law says that we couldn’t possibly have found a nicer dog and she also loves him to bits.

He seems to take all our time as our lanes are really mucky at the moment and we have to wash him, dry him with the hair dryer and then brush him every day.

Roll on the sunshine!!”

UPDATE SEPTEMBER 09

Here are photos of Jez on holiday in Tintagel and learning to swim!!
