Monty Bell

Gone to Rainbow Bridge

Sad News 6th April 2022

Monty’s mum said, “I’m very sad to say we had to say goodbye to Monty today. IRR let us take him in almost 9 years ago and he was such a fabulous family member. He lost his leg last year, then recently developed spondylitis. These photos are the first and last ones taken of him. Run free sweet boy, and thank you IRR.

MONTY’S HISTORY

(Was Sammy)

Monty is 16 months old. He was rescued and placed in the care of IRR

FOSTERER’S FIRST REPORT – UK: SEPTEMBER 2012

Monty is house trained, but he appears to have had little or no basic training. He is not possessive with toys or food, and he is friendly with people and other dogs, though he is not so keen on cats.

Monty is uncertain about being left alone at the moment and needs support to develop more confidence when away from human company. Monty has a strong character and likes to be `in charge’, so he will need an experienced, understanding owner who can help him to build trust.

Fosterer’s 2nd report – UK: 29th September 2012

Monty is house trained, but we still expect the occasional accident. He will now sit’ andgo to bed’ when told. He is not toy or food possessive.

He is a friendly boy who likes people and animals. He would probably be more comfortable around older children.

Fosterer’s third report: November 2012

Monty is progressing well and has started some basic training. He understands ‘sit’, and ‘wait’ which he will do for a small amount of time. His recall is improving and he will come to his name, unless he has found something far more interesting.

On walks with slip lead he does pull, but he walks well with a Halti.

Monty is not food or toy possessive. He is playful with the other dogs and toys.

He does still explore new things with his mouth, so will chew anything loose; something an adopter would need to be aware.

Monty is very food orientated, which helps a lot in his training.

At night Monty sleeps on the sofa quite happily. He will also rest and sleep well in a crate, with a chew and after exercise.

He is friendly with people and other animals. He does tend to jump up at new people he meets and get very excited. He also chases birds and our dog friendly cat, who has now retreated to her ‘den’. Consequently we are unsure how he will be with other cats.

Monty travels well wearing a car harness; otherwise he would be restless without it.

Fosterer’s 4th report: February 10th 2013

Monty has settled into our routine very well which includes cycling and long walks to keep him less bouncy. He loves running alongside the bicycle every morning before relaxing in his crate.

Monty walks in the evening with a head collar, which he is good with. He has made a great friend with our yellow Labrador and they run around the garden most of the afternoon, in and out of the house. He is great with other dogs and met 3 new ones when we took him swimming at the Hydro pool yesterday.

Monty is so playful and finds it a great game when he picks up something that isn’t his and runs around the rooms with us trying to rescue it from him. If we catch him near something that isn’t his, ‘Leave’ is starting to work and becoming a familiar command, so he is making progress and we are confident that eventually he will realise what he can and can’t have.

In our absence Monty has chewed items. He also likes to explore the garden and plants are out of their pots in the garden, we have given up with re potting now.

Monty is a truly loving dog and wouldn’t hurt anything. He is a pleasure to have. He loves cuddles and loves being in the company of others. A great dog indeed!

We do feel that training classes would be a huge benefit to encourage focus.

Fosterer’s 5th report: April 2013

Monty continues to be loving and playful. He is approximately 16 months old now and is very energetic.

Monty sleeps on the sofa at night and is well behaved. He is crate trained and is happy to stay in the crate for short periods while his fosterer is out of the house.

Monty has started training classes and is enjoying learning new things.

He is looking for an active person or family (with older children) who will include him in their daily life.

APRIL 2013

Monty has gone to his Forever Home

UPDATE FROM MONTY’S FOREVER HOME MAY 2013

This is what Monty’s (was Sammy) adopters had to say:-

When we first met Sammy, it was love at first sight!

He is such a handsome boy who immediately sat himself on our 10 year old son’s lap, friends forever. On the drive back from Lincolnshire, we tried to think of a new name as my name is Sam and we thought two of us with such similar names might be too much. The name Monty was seen on the side of a lorry and we thought it suited him, so Monty he became.

It didn’t take Monty long to settle in and meet new friends, both human and doggy. He is already great friends with Poppy the black lab puppy, Billy – a two yr old lab and Meg the collie. He enjoys long walks with them at the weekends as well as several short walks a day in the week. We’re just about used to his pre-breakfast early walk now and it really does set you up for the day! Living close to a safari park has meant Monty has now seen bison, zebra and camels on his walks, all new and very exciting.

Training classes are going well and Monty can now ‘stay’ for over a minute, amazing! and we’ve taught him ‘paw’ and ‘roll over’, all made easier by his love of treats.

He does love to carry shoes around, especially the ones I’ve just taken off, but he doesn’t chew them. It can be tricky to find them when you need them, though. Once he learns to walk more politely on the lead and his recall becomes more reliable, we intend to go to some more exciting classes – perhaps agility or flyball…

Monty has become a well loved family member who has filled the hole left by the loss of our old dog. He’s such a lovable chap, always pleased to see you and he is getting used to our routine so well. We wouldn’t be without him! Thank you to everyone involved in his rescue and foster care and we promise to keep you updated!
