Nemo Casey

Gone to Rainbow Bridge

THE SADDEST NEWS (APRIL 2018)

Sadly, Nemo has crossed over Rainbow Bridge. Understandably, Maddy and Kevin are distraught and are finding it hard to bear.

We think Nemo may easily have been 12yrs or 13yrs which is a good age considering his terrible start in life and it is a testament to the love and care he has been receiving in his wonderful home but no time is long enough with our precious charges so our hearts go out to them.

Maddy had previously said of him “Nemo was a collie-type mix in his senior years who previously lived as a stray with thousands of other dogs at a large steel plant in Romania. He was fostered by Irish Retriever Rescue in the UK before joining Kev and I in 2010. He had 2 wonderful new doggy friends in Charlie and Petra and enjoyed a very happy life.

Nemo was always just about the sweetest soul in the world. He adored being a pet, and just loved to be warm, clean, fed (very important – food!) and loved (cuddles, even more important!).

He could mostly be found snoozing on a duvet or pile of cushions somewhere. Nemo preferred an easy life, favouring sleep over most other activities. Although he did love his walks in the fields, there was no chance you would see him out if the weather conditions were unfavourable!

Nemo had a very awkward gait and significant trouble with an old injury to one of his elbows but he had regular Bowen treatments to help him with his movement which he absolutely loved”.

HISTORY

IRR believed Nemo was approaching four years old when he arrived in the UK having travelled from Romania with Doly. Both dogs were fostered then rehomed in Somerset. Maddy did some detective work in connection with an ear tattoo he had. She found out he had been rescued twice in Romania and, from the dating of the tattoo, she found out he was older than IRR had been told.

A TALE OF TWELVE ROMMIES

Some time ago in “009”, a worried lady dropped a line

To see if we could offer aid to dogs whose passage they had paid

ROLDA took them from the street - starving, frightened, often beat

These Rommies only fed on scraps from kindly workers wearing caps

Just starting out to bring them here, they needed help to get in gear

They sought to bring the most they could. Experienced rescues would be good

We said we’d foster three or four. Already full, no room for more

But we would try to squeeze some in. To turn them down would be a sin

Plans to rescue more and more, little feet that once were sore

Here they’d come from distant shores clutching Passports in their paws

To get one then a lengthy path, without, they’d feel the Customs wrath

De-wormed, de-fleaed and then the stabs of all those dreaded rabies jabs

Each one, their details on a chip would come to England on a ship

But first the journey, oh so long. they prayed that nothing would go wrong.

Some off already to new “Mum” Dover, London ours still come.

Not many more to drop we knew. We eagerly await our two

Timing crucial, breath was held. At last, a glimpse – relief - tears welled

Now safe with us, more miles we know, as down to Bristol they would go

They’d journeyed from across the sea, in transport good as it could be

But we could barely hold our glee. We knew, at last, our babes were free

Our first to come in dead of night, two dogs together clung in fright

It was a pitiful, sad sight. We promised them we wouldn’t bite

Two siblings, they were Blau and Blanche. How many more would cross La Manche?

A third, Bianca, our next date with tiny Dona shared a crate

Happy Rommies take a bow Peppy, Sacha, Lulu now.

Little Gypsy’s much loved too. Their lives are like a dream come true.

Well spoilt, soon it’s treats not scraps, they lounge in beds and sit on laps

Having fun and getting mucky. These little dogs are really lucky

The Rolda team was growing fast but these four couldn’t be our last

Once more we helped in twenty ten. No more than two we said again

In fact, we caved and squeezed in three, then two, then three more would be free.

Toto, Ada, little Bela, two ladies and a handsome fellar

Sisters then, Carmen and Roxy. Mostly white and slightly foxy

Homed together, two of four. Life for them is not a bore.

Carmen’s name is Bella now. They’re very close and never row.

They live with Dolly and big Flossie, the girl in charge cos she’s quite bossy

Roxy’s name has changed to Maisie. Toto’s Sammy … he’s so lazy.

He’s not too keen on comb and brush but so laid back he’ll never rush.

Ada now is little Dinky cos she rolls, she’s nicknamed “Stinky”

She once met Bela who’s her sister. They ran in circles like a twister.

Rommie, Nemo, two big boys and tiny Doly, all such joys

Came with very little fuss. They were the final batch for us.

Alfie, previously Rommie really loves his special Mommie.

The tiny girl who once was Doly now answers to the name of Mollie.

Nemo then and Nemo still, by far, the top of Maddy’s bill
A gentle and such handsome boy whose life is filled with fun and joy

FIRST FOSTERER REPORT

Belinda said” Nemo is about the same size as our Millie (small retriever) and is quite nervous. He is very playful and is already trying to persuade Connie to play with him – she hasn’t responded so far, but hope she will. He travels extremely well, slept the whole of the journey with us and was no trouble on his previous marathon trip from Romania.

Nemo will need some lead training although he is quite happy wearing a collar. He refused breakfast this morning and has also refused all treats offered to him, but got very excited when Terry got some bread out for our lunch and gobbled down a piece we offered him. We have discovered that he has the bottom half of his right ear missing, it doesn’t notice visually as the hair has grown but it definitely has a piece missing. He appears to have a lovely temperament, though I haven’t been able to test his cat and child friendliness – will do so at the end of the week. He met the chickens this morning and he just stared at one of them who stared straight back at him!

At the moment he is definitely not at all an alpha male. He gets on really well with our 4 girls”.

UPDATE 9/03/2010

Nemo (who is about the size of a Border Collie) has really settled into his life here with us, he is good with the cat and takes no notice of the chickens. He loves to go on walks and is very enthusiastic about everything that is going on around him. He travels well in the car and yesterday jumped into the back with no prompting. He asks to go out when he needs to and loves being brushed. He bounces around the house when he is excited.

Nemo is an affectionate little dog who loves to be stroked and have his tummy tickled. He curls up to sleep with our dogs and gets on really well with them. He even copies Millie and barks at the postman and milkman! I am attaching a couple of pictures we took of him when we were walking yesterday. Obviously he hasn’t been off lead yet, but he walks quite well on the lead.

NEMO IS IN HIS FOREVER HOME

Nemo is now happily living with Maddy and Kev in Somerset. He has 2 wonderful new doggy friends, Charlie and Petra http://www.maddycasey.co.uk/aboutme.htm and, apparently, play is the order of the day followed by more and more play.
