Oscar

Oscar is a castrated seven and a half year old Golden Retriever. He was vet checked and rabies vaccinated as normal to come to the UK where he went into fosterer with Diane.

HISTORY

Oscar was surrendered due to one of the children having eczema as a result of an allergy to dander. He was collected by a friend of Kathryn’s in Kerry who drove Oscar to meet Kathryn.

Apparently, Oscar is good with children, dogs and cats.

PERSONALITY

Diane says”Oscar is alert and inquisitive and is a loving boy who craves attention from everyone but does not stress when left alone.  He is a happy boy indoors and out.

His first day finished with him settled down for the night and quiet”.

HEALTH

Oscar seems to be very healthy overall with no obvious signs of problems.

SOCIAL LEARNING

TRAVEL:  When we first met Oscar, he was very nervous about coming away from the safety of the transport and the other dogs but he travelled home well, without any problems, and just seemed happy to watch through the windows

HOUSETRAINED:  He is fully housetrained.

BASIC TRAINING: He doesn’t seem to understand the usual commands but he is beginning to respond to sit – for a treat.  He is also learning ”Wait” and then   “walk “ to cross the road.

LEADWALKING: When out walking, he walks well on a harness but he will, sometimes, pull but not too strongly, if he picks up a scent.  When out, he will walk straight to people coming towards him with or without a dog just to get a fuss.

RESOURCE GUARDING: Oscar has shown no evidence of resource guarding although he loves his food and looks forward to his meals. He doesn’t counter surf or take anything that he shouldn’t but will wait for his food or treats. He does sometimes snatch the treats but, most of the time, he is quite gentle.

He doesn’t sleep on a bed very often but lies on a blanket or the carpet. He will play with a tennis ball and is happy to give it up to us.

He has a habit of picking rubbish up e.g. empty crisp packets, paper cup etc and will hold the item in his mouth but he will, willingly, give it up when we get to a bin.  If he finds discarded food that is different and I have to get that off him straight away!!!!!

SEPARATION ANXIETY: He shows no signs of separation anxiety

ADULTS & CHILDREN: He is very friendly and happy with both children and adults, loving the fuss that he gets.  He will follow everyone  around the house

DOGS: Oscar has very little in the way of social skills and does not wait when meeting other dogs. Instead, he goes straight over to sniff from nose to rear.  Occasionally, he has become entangled with the lead but he just wants to sniff.  Once he has finished, he will just walk away.  He does not have a preference for small or large dogs, he loves them all!

When meeting other dogs, he is not aggressive but just wants to be able to get close and sniff them.  He has been accepted as friendly by all but one young GSD Cross.

CATS: We have not had any contact with cats as they tend to move on when they see Oscar coming.

OTHER ANIMALS: Oscar loves to try and get into the water where the ducks / geese / swans are. It is almost as if he has never seen any before. He can pull quite strongly to get to them.

OSCAR’S DREAM HOME

Oscar is a lovely boy who would fit in almost anywhere although maybe not in a home with resident cats. For sure, he will make his forever home into a very happy home.

JANUARY 2019

Oscar has gone to live in his Forever Home.
