POPPY HAS HER DREAM HOME

Poppy has the perfect forever home with Des, Michelle and Mum, Sue. They already think Daisy is absolutely fantastic and the most loving dog too.

HER FIRST NIGHT AND DAY (22.8.2018)

Michelle was delighted to tell us how well Daisy did on for her first night in her forever home when, apparently, she settled far better than expected.

She had the option to go anywhere in the house so she visited Michelle upstairs in bed, then went to see her Mum in her room before deciding she wanted to go and sleep downstairs.

When Des popped downstairs to see her, she wagged her tail repeatedly and tried to encourage her upstairs which she did but, again, she decided to go back downstairs on her own. When checked again, she was laying out fast asleep on the cool floor, not on a chair, rug or on one or her lovely new beds.

She met a hedgehog in the garden and, gently, put one paw out to it but Des said “no” and she came away. She was super excited after meeting the hedgehog, though, and had a second wind of dashing around excitedly, like they do when they want to play.

In the morning, she checked every inch of the back garden for two hours, had her meal and gave a happy grunting type of sound afterwards before going to pooh in the fountain! She then lay out and went to sleep.

Michelle has a great plan for Daisy’s continued training and development. She told us “To start with, Mum and I took her for a 15 min lead walk just over the road from us on the green. There is no way she will be going off lead, of course, although we have heard about a secure field, that can be hired for recall work, so we are planning on doing that with her.

She is a strong girl but not as strong as my Mum’s large Retriever, Toby, could be when he had a mind to. We have a harness for street and for small green spaces walks. She is really, really alert for and loves all the doggy smells.

Daisy gets really excited to meet anyone that will stop to greet her so we have been asking people to approach her gently and slowly as she has only just joined us and may be nervous. Although she gets excited, she does listen, as you’ll know because I can see you’ve been working with her.

She only had a short street walk (30mins or so) as we didn’t want to swamp her with too many new things and she was getting more excited as time passed.

Daisy has not properly met any dogs as yet although my friend talked to me over her back fence with her dog, Lucy Labrador, who was making interested noises at the fence. Daisy was right at the other side of the fence listening to her, with a huge smiley face, sat upright and making no fuss.

She will go out again later this evening. We will be building up to three walks a day and gradually meeting more people and some dogs each day. We know it is important she is not swamped by traffic, people and animals.

Many thanks to everyone at IRR from Michelle, Des & Sue. You are doing one hell of a job! “

HISTORY

Daisy is a beautiful 6yrs old Golden Retriever. As is the normal, she was groomed, vet checked, spayed and received the necessary inoculations for being eligible to travel to the UK where she went into foster

She has lived with other dogs in a home environment and with children but Daisy has been bred from and is now reaching the age where she needs to put her paws up and just become a much loved pet.

She came from the same home as the very handsome Mossie who fathered several babies and, like Mossie, Daisy is being rehomed because her owners realise that increasing family commitments mean the time they have to spend on her is limited.

HEALTH

Daisy is overweight and unfit so she is on two small meals a day.

PERSONALITY

Beautiful, smiley Daisy is a typical Golden Retriever, a people dog through and through. She adores cuddles and getting all the attention that she has been craving.

SOCIAL LEARNING

TRAVEL: She was very anxious about travelling from Ireland but, for sure, if she is with her forever people, she will probably come to enjoy travelling.

HOUSETRAINING: Daisy is fully house trained. She is very clean in the house and has had no accidents even when left.

BASIC TRAINING: She has received little basic training but will sit for her food.

LEADWALKING: She doesn’t seem to have had any lead training at all
but is learning fast.

RESOURCE GUARDING: Daisy prefers her own space and enjoys having her own possessions around her.

SEPARATION ANXIETY: Daisy shows no signs of separation anxiety

ADULTS: She is very friendly with adults especially men.

CHILDREN: Daisy is friendly with children.

DOGS: On arrival and for the first few days, Daisy was anxious and not comfortable around my dogs in the house.

When she was outside with the dogs, she was much better so I think it was just being in a small space with them that worried her. She has been pretty good with dogs she has met up with around the village.

I met up with a friend and her two dogs at the secure field and she was fine with all the dogs while running around off lead for the hour..

As expected, her unsociable behaviour must have been due to her feeling anxious because it improved tremendously when she began to feel more settled.

DAISY’S DREAM HOME

Given her initial anxiety when going into foster and her total adoration of people, we believe Daisy will be much happier as an only dog in her new home.

Ideally, she would love to go somewhere where she is absolutely idolised and becomes the centre of somebody’s world, which is no less than this lovely lady deserves.
