Radley Penney

RADLEY IS SO HAPPY IN HIS FOREVER HOME (12.4.2015)

Helen tells us that Oisin, now Radley, and Merlin are already best mates. He had a wonderful first weekend with lots of new places to visit. He has been sniffing in the woods at Alderley Edge, went up to the Lake District for a paddle in Elterwater and had Sunday dinner at her Mum’s. He has also been to Lyme Park.

He came down to earth and had his little boy op but, that done, he is good to go now.

She says “Radley loves snoozing on his Orvis tempur pedic bed. It was purchased for my late dog, Jazz, and now Radley is enjoying the benefits.

Many thanks to Kathryn and all at IRR. He has found the magical forever home she promised him.

UPDATES IN 2020

EARLY HISTORY

This poor boy, who had been straying for some time, was taken in by another rescue. The owner had been found but he was not wanted. Oisin was in a truly deplorable state and he had, pretty much, lost the will to live.

Oisin (now Radley) is a very handsome Golden Retriever aged between 2 and 3yrs. Because of his initial exceptionally poor condition, he was not neutered in Ireland.

Oisin (pronounced Usheen) means Little Deer and the name is derived from Irish mythology. Oisin’s father was a great warrior. Kathryn, our Irish Coordinator chose the name as Oisin is as gentle as a deer but as fearsome as a warrior in his battle to survive.

There are some dogs that grab you by the heart and shake it violently and Oisin is one of those dogs who leaves a paw print on your heart. All Kathryn could do was kneel down and promise him that she would do the very best she could to change his world.

He was groomed for 5 hours and seemed to protest a little but Evelyn and the IRR Groomer wouldn’t give up. When Kathryn went to see Oisin the following day he was much brighter. He had got that twinkle back in his eyes and he held his head high and with a very loud bark seemed to announce he was still in the world and wanted everyone to know it.

HEALTH

Oisin was once as close to emaciated as he could get but he got stronger every day and has put on weight. He is not eating as much kibble as he was but he eats the tinned meat like there is no tomorrow. He has also been having Complan which has made a huge difference.

We are happy to be able to report, the Irish team have done a fabulous job and, already, Oisin is big and strong and absolutely full of life.

PERSONALITY

His personality has now started to emerge. He is very loving but, because he craves it so much, he can get overly excited and will sometimes jump up or bark with joy because of the amount of attention and love he is getting. This will, no doubt, get less and less as time goes on. He has no fear of women but he can still be fearful of men.

SOCIAL LEARNING

Travel: He is an extremely good traveller.

Housetraining: Oisin appears to be fully house trained.

Leadwalking: He needs to learn to walk on a lead properly so a harness would be essential and he has already become accustomed to one. He is very strong and needs some lead walking lessons at home before attempting to take him on proper walks. He is, understandably, still manic over food so tidbits will definitely be a great training aid for him.

Basic training: It is important that he is adopted by someone with previous experience who would be proactive in training him. He does need to be given boundaries and basic training and it is essential he is adopted by someone who has the time and energy to bring out the best in this boy.

Feeding: He is, naturally, totally manic and obsessed by food having been in intensive care for a while to make sure that he recovered his weight, which he is doing.

It is suggested that anything given to him should be put in a bowl, including treats. Getting him to sit, which he already does, before putting the bowl down will also help to steady him.

An antigulp bowl would be a very good idea for him.

Children: He is very good with slightly older children but would probably be better in a home without small children because he does grab biscuits from your hand.

There could also be the chance, while thinking they were loving him, that tiny children, especially those unused to dogs, could, inadvertently, tease or torment him.

Dogs: He is fantastic with other dogs and craves their company. He tends to get depressed if he is on his own and was always with his friend, Pele. A home with another dog is, therefore, essential.

Cats: He is very interested in cats and, unfortunately, will give chase (as a game – not to hurt them). A home without cats is, therefore, essential.

OISIN’S DREAM HOME

This boy must go to an exceptional home. Kathryn promised him that his forever home would be magically wonderful and IRR UK have promised her that that will be the case. He is now a typical, young, fun loving, boisterous Golden Retriever. A good sized garden and a mate to play with would be the icing on the cake.
