Gone to Rainbow Bridge

Sad News 20 May 2025

Charlie’s mum wrote: “I am writing this to give you the very sad news that IRR CharliefromSpain died on 20 May.

Charlie came to me in October 2019 when he was rehomed from Penny and Gary Hammond in Spain. They had had him for 5 years, having rescued him from a killing shelter. He had a badly deformed front leg and shoulder. IRR rehomed him to the UK and when I saw his photo I thought he could be happy here with me with lots of grass and a big yard/garden, so I asked to have him and what a difference he made to my life.

He was the bravest, most determined, loving, happy, loyal dog and we loved one another very much. He always wanted to be close and to have me in his sight and I am missing him dreadfully. It has to be said he didn’t tolerate fools gladly and sometimes objected to other dogs in his face but then he was unable to move away. One unique and very very special boy.

Thank you IRR for bringing him to the UK and all the IRR members who contributed to buying his special wheels from the USA. Thank you too to my friends Janette and Chris Humphries who kindly loaned him his beloved buggy when their Oscar refused to use it! That buggy was his special place and he sat in it in the garden for hours and hours in his later years, and he died in it last Tues when it became impossible for even Charlie to continue in the face of extreme pain when his “good” front leg gave up the fight.

People have been unbelievably kind to him. I would like to thank Sarah Darling of K9 Gait Therapy who spent hours and hours massaging and caring for him, those two loved one another so much. And Ruth Punshon his hydro therapist who gave him wonderful swimming sessions. I took him to Ruth after an adventure in the Elan Valley when he took off after other dogs into a small river, got out of his depth and could not swim so I had to go in and rescue him, only to find that I was out of my depth too!

I will love you forever Charlie and I know that lots of your friends will be talking about you for a very long time to come. Farewell, until we meet again when you will have 4 good legs and be running about Rainbow Bridge.”

History

CHEEKY CHARLIE IS FOLLOWING IN THE PAWSTEPS OF SOME OF THE GREAT IRR DOGS

Charlie is a gorgeous 5 year old Spanish boy who was given up by his owners as he was being bullied by another dog. Sadly, he has a deformed right front leg so he is, effectively 3 legged. Fortunately, we know from previous experience, with Ricky, Digby and Duke, this is absolutely no barrier to living a long and extremely happy life.

CHARLIE HAS A FABULOUS HOME

He has been adopted by Sue and is settling in well with her other 2 Goldens. For sure, he will have a fabulous home with her.
