A SAD GOODBYE TO HUGO (13/1/2024)

Hugo’s mum wrote, “It is with deepest sorrow that I have to share with you that we had to let IRR Hugo go yesterday (Saturday 13 January 2024). He became very unwell during Christmas when we discovered that he had a mass between his lungs. We tried a number of things including steroids who were helping to reduce the mass but in the end Hugo’s body was too tired to carry on. Yesterday that time had come. We put him in the car, he was lying next to me in my arms the same way he arrived nearly 8 years ago when we brought him home from Norfolk and took him to our vet who had cared for him during this illness. We wanted to make sure there was absolutely no stress and he was surrounded by people who knew him. I told him that Louise and Barnaby were with him in spirit. The end was stressless and peaceful.

He was a small boy but has the biggest personality, he left a mark with everyone he met and touched their hearts, nobody every forgot Hugo. We have many wonderful memories of holidays in Cornwall and Norfolk. Every year he visited his special foster mum Louise and foster brother Barnaby and you could tell how happy it made him and how that special bond never broke.

He was a very poorlie boy when he arrived with Louise and only thanks to her love, care and devotion did he go onto the road of recover and we were finally able to bring him home in March 2016. 8 years were never long enough but we will love and miss him forever and know that he is free of pain now. We are forever grateful to IRR that they brought this special boy into our lives. He was one in a million xx.”

HEART OF IRELAND WINNER (27.8.2017)

We are immensely proud and emotional tonight. Although we were not able to attend the Irish Retriever Reunion yesterday we found out that our Hugo won the Heart of Ireland Award!

We were lucky enough to adopt Hugo in 2016 thanks to IRR and his fabulous foster mum Louise Wright who helped him back on the road to recovery both physically and mentally. Special thanks to everyone at IRR, Lorraine Johnston, Kathryn Julie Crofton, Wendy Illman, Belinda McAvoy and Paula Hughes just to name a few. We are forever grateful

BARNABY REMEMBERS

While Mum was ruining our art work with the mop today, Delilah had a memory … a very special memory … a very special thing that Hugo showed us.

Before he had a house to live in, Hugo had to get all his things, even food from the rubbish bins … and when he came here he showed us how to do it. But he said it was only very very special things worth getting because humans get very protective about their rubbish.

Then I remembered it’s Hugo’s Mum’s birthday and I didn’t know if my Mum had remembered too so we helped by emptying the rubbish bin and the recycling bin and the plastics bin. Very quietly as we were searching for something for Auntie Diana’s Birthday!

We found a big pot of strawberry yoghurt!!! An unopened strawberry yoghurt!!!! The biggest pot we ever get! Wowzers!!! Hugo was right about humans keeping treasure in bins! Yippee!!! The lid came off so we all had a bit to make sure it was nice enough for Auntie Diana.

It was lovely and there’s a bit left for her for when she comes to Norfolk! What a brilliant birthday present!

HISTORY

Hugo is a male Golden Retriever who was 8 years old in 2016. He was vaccinated, neutered and micro-chipped.

Hugo was found straying and was taken in by Garrick Rescue Shelter. Helen, at the shelter, contacted Kathryn, IRR’s Ireland Coordinator who promptly took him into her care. Hugo had mange, infected ears and his coat was in a very poor condition.

In the UK, he went into foster with Louise and Foster Brother Barnaby.

PERSONALITY

Despite being apparently unloved, neglected and left to stray Hugo is affectionate and gentle.

SOCIAL LEARNING

Hugo does tend to jump up for attention but this can easily be corrected with love, thoughtfulness and gentle correction. He is affectionate and gentle. He is also good with dogs and cats.

HUGO’S DREAM HOME

Hugo needs a kind loving home where he can experience the warmth, love and kindness that he has been missing. He will make that lucky person a loyal, affectionate, life-long companion.

A LOVELY FOREVER HOME (March 2016)

Hugo went to his Forever Home with Diana, Derek and family

HUGO’S WISHES (15.7.2016)

Lorraine announced “This weekend sees the launch of Hugo’s Wishes (named after Hugo MacKenzie) so I’d like to introduce you to one of our extra special boys that is being supported through this scheme.

Hugo has been rehomed under special contract to be supported for life but his wonderful family have taken on the ongoing costs themselves with the security of knowing, should circumstances change, IRR will always be here for them and Hugo.

His fabulous Mum, Diana, will tell his story in her heartfelt words”

OUR NEW BOY, HUGO (20.3.2016)

I would formally like to introduce our new boy Hugo. Thank you IRR that we were allowed to adopt this special boy. I would also like to say a big thanks to Louise who took such special care of him the last few weeks and who gave us such a warm welcome yesterday when we collected Hugo from Norfolk and took him back to his new home in Northumberland.

Hugo had a very restful night (on the bed I may add lol), had his breakfast, managed to distribute every single toy throughout the house and is now exploring the garden before we head off into the park for his first walk with his new sister Ellie.

Thank you to Lorraine and everyone involved at IRR who are doing such a sterling job helping these wonderful Goldens. We are forever grateful xx

FOSTER BROTHER, BARNABY ADDED

“Poor Hugo was really poorly when he stayed with us and couldn’t put on weight even though he ate lots and lots and even more than lots!

Everyone was so very worried about him and he had to have lots of tests and medicine before he got better and could finally go to live with his forever family.

He moved to Northumberland which Mum says is a long long way but he is coming to visit us in Norfolk with his family very soon.

I’m SO excited! I love seeing my foster brothers and sisters again and Mum says because IRR is such a fantastic family we still see most of our ‘old’ foster dogs even when they’re adopted! We are so lucky!!”
